For each project or internship on a fresher resume, state what it was, what you personally did, which tools you used and what you produced. Keep academic work and employment clearly labelled. The three examples below show how to do this for accounts, engineering and office-support applications.
This guide focuses on what to write. For layout, section order and file formats, use our ATS resume format guide for India.
Make an evidence list before writing
For every project or internship, record five things:
- Context: course project, personal project, internship or volunteering.
- Task: the problem, assignment or work you were given.
- Contribution: what you personally did, including where you assisted someone else.
- Tools: software, equipment or methods you actually used.
- Output: a report, analysis, prototype, presentation or other result you can explain.
Keep certificates and project notes for checking facts. You do not have to attach them all to the resume. If a team produced the result, separate your contribution from the team's overall work.
Three worked examples
The following are fictional teaching examples, not customer resumes or claimed results. Use the pattern only when the underlying activities are true for you.
Commerce graduate targeting accounts assistant roles
Confirmed scenario: A student used sample transactions in an academic exercise, prepared a ledger in Excel and checked it against a supplied bank statement. There was no employer or real client.
Weak: “Expert in accounting, finance management and banking.”
Clearer:
Academic Accounting Exercise — BCom coursework
Prepared an Excel ledger from sample transactions and compared entries with a supplied bank statement to identify reconciliation differences.
This describes the task without claiming professional accounting experience. If you only observed GST work during training, do not turn it into independent GST filing. Name Tally or another application only if you actually used it, and describe your level honestly.
Engineering student applying for a junior technical role
Confirmed scenario: A team developed a sensor-based prototype. The candidate assembled the sensor connections and recorded readings during tests. Other team members wrote the software.
Weak: “Developed a complete IoT system independently.”
Clearer:
Final-Year Team Project — Sensor Monitoring Prototype
Assembled sensor connections and recorded test readings for the team prototype; documented observed differences for review.
The revised wording makes the contribution clear without claiming ownership of the software. Add the sensor, software or test method only when confirmed. If the prototype did not reach deployment, describe it as a prototype.
Administration intern targeting office-support roles
Confirmed scenario: The intern updated an attendance sheet, organised files and helped schedule interviews under supervision.
Weak: “Managed HR operations and recruitment.”
Clearer:
Administration Intern — [Actual organisation and dates]
Updated attendance records, organised employee files and supported interview scheduling under the administration team's supervision.
“Supported” is useful evidence of a real contribution. Replacing it with “led” would change the facts. Do not include confidential employee information or copies of internal records as proof.
What if you have no internship?
Leave out an empty employment section. Select relevant academic or personal work and explain it under Projects or Practical Work. A course completion certificate shows completion of training; it does not by itself prove that you can perform every skill listed in the syllabus.
If your evidence is genuinely thin, choose a small practice task related to your target role, complete it and document your work. Only then include it. Do not write a planned project as finished or present a tutorial copied step by step as an independently designed product.
Match the job description without copying it
For a vacancy asking for Excel reporting, check whether you have actually prepared a report, cleaned data or used the requested functions. If yes, describe the task where you used them. If no, do not add those functions to obtain a higher keyword score.
Keep distinct labels for practical use, coursework and basic familiarity. A final-year student can state an expected completion date, while avoiding “graduate” until the qualification is completed. Describe exam, registration or licence status exactly as confirmed when applying for a regulated role.
Do all bullets need numbers?
No. A precise task, tool and output can be informative without a percentage. “Prepared an Excel summary of survey responses for the project report” is useful if true. “Improved efficiency by 60%” needs a real measurement and a clear basis for attributing the improvement to you.
When a number is known, use it to explain scale rather than decoration: the number of interviews you helped schedule, records you reviewed or test cases you ran. If it is not known, do not estimate it just to strengthen the wording.
Review the final page
- Can you explain every named tool and activity in an interview?
- Are academic work, internships and employment clearly distinguished?
- Are dates and qualification names consistent with your documents?
- Does the summary identify a realistic target role?
- Are the most relevant examples easy to find?
- Do the PDF and Word files preserve the same content and readable layout?
One readable page is often enough for an early-career resume. Use a second page only when relevant evidence needs it; do not shrink the text simply to force a page count.
Questions from first-time applicants
Can I include an internship under Experience?
Yes, provided the title clearly says Intern and the organisation, dates and activities are accurate. A heading such as Internship Experience removes ambiguity.
Should I list every subject I studied?
Usually a short selection relevant to the role is more useful. Projects and practical tasks can explain application of knowledge better than a long syllabus list.
Is the same resume suitable for India and UAE applications?
Keep a factual master document, then check the vacancy's requirements. Your education and projects do not change, but the emphasis and relevant application details may. Consult the Gulf CV guide rather than adding personal details automatically.
